Dr. Kristen Dowling
am a Registered Psychologist with the College of Psychologists of BC. I hold a Ph.D. in Counselling and Clinical Psychology from the department of Applied Psychology and Human Development at the University of Toronto, and a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Western Ontario. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in psychology, from Simon Fraser University.
For over twelve years, I have been using effective, evidence-based strategies to assist individuals in the areas of anxiety, depression, stress management, eating disorders, life transitions, relationship issues, trauma, and grief. I have worked in a variety of settings, including university counselling centres, private practice, and a hospital trauma unit – working with clients with severe trauma histories that include self harm, suicidality and clinical depression. I also provided career counselling to both undergraduate and master’s level students at the University of Toronto and I supervised Master’s level counselling students at UBC Counselling Services.
Much of the focus of my work has been on treating anxiety and depression, both in individual and group therapy sessions. I have completed an externship at the Vancouver Couples and Family Institute, through which I gained the skills to help couples recognize and change disruptive repetitive patterns, improve communication, and strengthen their connection.
